An Australian father has paid $600,000 more for a single-storey brick home on a 16-acre plot of land to stop his children spending all day on their iPads.

The four-bedroom property in Mickleham, 40km north of Melbourne, had a guide price of $1.7 million to $1.87 million but sold on July 20 for a staggering $2.47 million.

Ray White sales advisor Adrian Prestileo told FEMAIL that the determined buyer knew he would win the auction that day.

“Man, I’m going to buy this house,” were the five words Mr. Prestileo got from his father before the auction started.

“The buyer made it clear that he wanted more space in the property for his children to play outside, so they wouldn’t be sitting behind the computer all day,” Mr Prestileo said.

“He had two or three young children, but he came to the auction alone. He had been looking for a while and I advised him to go hard at this auction because there was no plan B.”

Mr. Prestileo described the property as “niche” because it has acreage. This type of home is not as desirable to a standard buyer in the market right now.

Mr Prestileo said that in his experience he had never seen a house sell for so much more than the guide price.

There were three registered bidders that day and the auction was “aggressive” as the price quickly rose in increments of $50,000 to $100,000.

Mr. Prestileo assumed the man was in his late thirties or early forties.

Built in 2000, the ranch-style home features an open living and dining area connected to the kitchen.

There is a separate games room, an en suite bathroom to the first bedroom and a large family bathroom.

Outside there are several fenced paddocks, plenty of space for the children to play, a huge barn, stables, studio, large water tank and solar panels.
