CHILE 11 SCOTLAND 52: Townsend thrilled as his new-look Scots prove too hot to handle for Chile

  • Experimental side scores eight tries to claim another routine summer tour victory
  • Kyle Rowe and Jamie Dobie are the best of the bunch with two tries each
  • Head coach Townsend pleased with his men’s response to early pressure

Gregor Townsend praised the experimental Scottish line-up, which ‘went through the gears’ to eventually overwhelm Chile in Santiago.

The home side made things difficult for Townsend’s men in the opening 20 minutes, but they eventually found their rhythm and scored eight times.

Kyle Rowe and Jamie Dobie both caught the eye with two goals each, while Matt Currie scored his first goal for Scotland and hooker Patrick Harrison made his debut as a substitute.

Townsend praised the largely inexperienced squad for weathering the storm of the early days and ultimately proving their class and claiming a third victory on this tour of America.

The head coach said: ‘It was an enjoyable last 60 minutes of the game, especially in the second half when we went all out and looked very sharp.

‘It was a real test match in terms of atmosphere and the physicality that Chile brought and the pressure they put on us at the beginning, but I was very pleased with how we responded and how our accuracy improved as the match went on.

“It was a new team but they were very well-coordinated on the pitch. I thought the communication was really good. We showed in the second half that we were fit. I thought the bench did well when they came on. I thought we could have played another 10 or 20 minutes, so our players are looking really sharp towards the end of the season, which is a credit to them and what they’ve done on tour so far.”

Harrison, the Edinburgh hooker, was the last person on the tour to get some game time and Townsend added: ‘I’m really pleased for Patrick. He’s had to wait three weeks for his game but he’s trained really well and shown quite a bit of what he does well in training.’

Chile initially made life difficult with two first-half penalties either side of Scotland’s opener for Josh Bayliss. Rowe and Dobie then both claimed their first goals of the game, netting in both corners to underline the visitors’ growing dominance.

After Dobie opened the second period with his second, Chile claimed a deserved try through Diego Escobar, before Currie scored his fifth try for Scotland.

Escobar was then sent to the sin bin and Scotland landed three more times through Rowe, Dylan Richardson and Kyle Steyn.

GOALS; Chile — Try: Escobar. Cons: No. Pens: Videla, Salas. Scotland — Trying: Bayliss, Rowe (2), Dobie (2), Currie, Richardson, Steyn. Cons: Healy (3), Hastings (3). Pens: No.
