Penrith Panthers cult hero Brian To’o has caused another stir with a cheeky comment about the romance between teammate Nathan Cleary and Mary Fowler.

The NRL player and the Matildas footballer have been good friends since last year and To’o has joked several times about the Australian golden couple taking their relationship to the next level.

During an interview following the Panthers’ 18-12 win over the Titans, the prolific try scorer was back at work.

Fox Sports asked To’o why the Panthers fans cheered so loudly.

Cleary, who is recovering from an injury, was in attendance and presenter Yvonne Sampson wondered if the superstar halfback had angered the crowd.

To’o joked that fans were cheering on Cleary and her girlfriend Fowler, who are now “engaged.”

“Nathan? Yeah, he’s here with Mary,” To’o joked.

“They’re just chilling on the sidelines, everyone’s going crazy. They’re actually there for Nathan and Mary, so congratulations, I think they’re engaged.

Fowler was back in Australia last month after the Matildas’ disappointing Olympic Games in Paris, where the Australians failed to reach the knockout rounds despite a valiant performance against the United States in their final group match.

Mary and Nathan started dating late last year. Ny Breaking Australia was the first to report on their relationship.

The Panthers are in second place and are likely to get Nathan Cleary back from his shoulder injury to face the Sydney Roosters at Penrith Park in their qualifying final, likely to be played on Friday night.

“(Cleary) still has some hurdles to overcome, but we’re hopeful,” coach Ivan Cleary said.

However, Penrith cannot rely on the star player alone to solve the problems that have arisen during his absence, with the team looking exhausted and error-prone again on Saturday night.

Penrith never looked comfortable against the 14th-placed Titans, making 15 errors and trailing 6-4 at half-time despite a surprisingly strong first half from the visitors.

But it would be a brave commentator to write off the three-time reigning premier, especially now that they are certain to host the Roosters, who have not beaten Penrith since 2019.

Coach Cleary remains calm despite a difficult end to the regular season.

“It didn’t look the way we wanted it to, but the most important thing was that we won the game and we did that,” he said.

“I honestly feel like our defense has improved over the last month or so. What we didn’t have tonight was our offense to complement it. If we can get both together, we’re going to be tough to beat.”
