Nobel laureate Amartya Sen said on Saturday that he does not view the replacement of the IPC by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as a “welcome change” as there has been no comprehensive consultation involving all stakeholders.
Sen told reporters in Santiniketan that extensive discussions were needed before any new laws could be passed.
“There is no evidence that such extensive discussions were held before this was carried out with all stakeholders. Also in this vast country, the problems faced by a state like Manipur and another state, say Madhya Pradesh, cannot be the same,” he said.
“Any step to implement such a change with the help of the majority, without consultation with all parties involved, cannot be described as a welcome change, a good change that bodes well for me,” he added.
Sen was also asked about the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections.
He said: “The election results show that this (Hindutva) form of politics has been thwarted to some extent.”
The economist said the main cause of unemployment in the country is the neglect of the education and health sectors.
He said he saw nothing unique in the ‘New Education Policy 2020’.
“There is not much new in the new education policy,” he added.
