  • Rugby bosses are introducing away sections to Gallagher Premiership matches
  • Designated sections for away fans will add to the atmosphere and grow rugby
  • It will be important that home clubs fully embrace this and welcome away fans

It’s fantastic to see England rugby bosses thinking outside the box.

The game has been doing the same things repeatedly for too long and there was a clear need for change. The financial problems facing clubs and the demise of Worcester, Wasps and London Irish have shown exactly that.

I can only see positives in having special sections for rugby fans during matches.

It will certainly contribute to the atmosphere and that is what it is ultimately all about. It helps sell the product and broaden the appeal of rugby.

Such a situation has long been a status quo in football, but it was mainly done to avoid clashes with rival fans.

That is not the reason for this move in rugby. It is done for positive, not negative reasons. And that is to be welcomed.

The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. Actually I don’t see any disadvantages.

If I were an away fan, it would certainly be attractive to be in the same block with my fellow supporters. It adds to the feeling of camaraderie and is said to help create a sense of attachment.

If this is introduced, it is important that the home clubs fully embrace this.

There is no point in putting the away fans in the worst part of the pitch. The opposite should happen. They should be welcomed in style and given good seats with good access to food and drink options.

I hope this is implemented soon and more innovative thinking will emerge!
