DeBose starred in the film With Love.

The Oscar-winning actress will star opposite Ke Huy Quan in the upcoming Universal Pictures film set for release in February 2025.

Plot details of the film, which will be directed by first-time director Jonathan Eusebio – an acclaimed veteran stunt coordinator – are being kept under wraps.

Kelly McCormick and David Leitch of 87 North are producing the film, while Josh Stoddard, Luke Passmore and Matthew Murray are writing the script.

According to Deadline, after casting Quan, film executives were looking for the perfect female lead and spoke to a number of actors before settling on the ‘West Side Story’ star.

Ariana starred in the Disney animated film Wish last year and said she “cried like a baby” when she was cast in the film.

She told MovieWeb.com: ‘They came to me shortly after West Side Story premiered, and I hadn’t really won anything yet.

‘I was just happy that West Side Story was out and it seemed like I might get the chance to do more work.

‘Then they called, and Chris Buck [the director] was like, ‘We want to make this movie with you.’

“I thought, ‘Great, what is this?’ They hadn’t really told me yet, but then they explained what the story was going to be. I cried like a baby, because I was a Disney kid as a kid.”

DeBose voiced the heroine Asha in the film, explaining that her performance was inspired by other Disney princesses.

The 33-year-old star said: ‘I can tell you for sure that many of our previous Disney princesses and heroines have inspired me when I was in the cabin.

‘I could hear the echoes of Mulan and Cinderella.

“I would say, ‘That’s what Alice would have said,’ or ‘Raya, there you are, girl!’

“I took inspiration from so many characters in the canon.”
