  • Murray will likely make a final decision on his fitness on match day

Andy Murray says he is looking for ‘closure’ and to ‘feel the buzz’ on Center Court one last time as his battle to be fit for the Wimbledon singles is about to end.

Speaking at the Scot’s first press conference since undergoing surgery on his back to remove a cyst causing nerve pain in his right leg, he said he was feeling better every day.

“I just tried to do everything I could to get ready to start the tournament here. I don’t know if that will be enough,” said the two-time champion. ‘I’ve been practicing for the past few days. I played a set today. It went pretty well, but I still don’t have 100 percent sensation and feeling in my leg.

“It’s getting better every day. I’m hopeful that it will stay that way and that it will be enough to be on the track on Tuesday.

‘Tomorrow I’m going to play another set. I’ll do some physical tests tomorrow morning to see how far off I am physically. Then I’ll probably make a decision tomorrow (Monday) evening after that.’

Murray is due to face Tomas Machac on Tuesday and despite his claim that he would decide on his fitness the night before, it would not be a surprise for him to postpone a final decision until the day of his match.

The 37-year-old, who plans to retire after the Olympics, was asked what he wants to achieve from what would be a final appearance at Wimbledon.

“Well, the chance to play here for the last time,” he replied. “This is a place that has obviously been very good to me over the years.

‘Whether I feel afterwards that that was the right thing to do or not, I don’t know. But right now I feel like I want that opportunity.

“Maybe a little bit of closure. I just want to get the chance to play there again, hopefully on Centre Court, and feel that buzz.”
