NEW YORK — Veteran producer Almin Karamehmedovic, who has been the behind-the-scenes man at “World News Tonight” since 2014, has been named president of ABC News, the network announced Monday.
He replaces Kim Godwin, who retired after three years in may.
Godwin faced internal turmoil, partly because she was an outsider: she came to ABC News from a management role at CBS. Karamehmedovic, on the other hand, has been with ABC News since working as a freelance video editor in London in 1998.
He covered many international stories for ABC News before moving to the U.S. in 2008 and taking over production of “Nightline.”
“Almin has dedicated his career to ABC News, mastering every role and elevating journalism by connecting with viewers in deeply meaningful and engaging ways,” said Debra O’Connell, president of Disney News Group and Networks, who will become his boss.
The two major network newscasts — David Muir’s “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America” — have both achieved the highest ratings in network news, and it will be Karamehmedovic’s job to maintain that.
Network newsroom directors are among the most powerful positions in journalism. Their influence has waned in recent years, however, as cable news networks have become more prominent and corporate regulators like O’Connell have taken a more active role.
