Netflix is gearing up for its next big documentary drop with Titan: The OceanGate Disaster, so be sure to get its exact release date and time in the diary so that you don’t miss a thing.
It’s been nearly two years since OceanGate made headlines across the globe. The company’s Titan submersible began its journey to the depths of the North Atlantic Ocean to explore the Titanic wreck on June 18, 2023.
After losing its communication with the mothership, it never resurfaced, leading to a search and a whole host of conspiracy theories. Just a couple of days later, the vessel was found to have imploded from the pressure of the surrounding waters, killing all five passengers on board.
The victims included Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman Dawood, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and Hamish Harding, as well as OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who is the focus of the Netflix documentary.

What is Titan: The OceanGate Disaster about?
As well as tracking what happened with the doomed Titan expedition, the new documentary will focus on the years leading up to the incident, including Rush’s desire to become the next big innovator – no matter what the cost.
As per the official synopsis, “The Titan submersible’s ill-fated journey to the ruins of the Titanic dominated headlines in June 2023, but nothing can prepare you for Titan, coming to Netflix this summer.
“This new documentary examines OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, his quest to become the next billionaire innovator, and the doomed underwater endeavor that forced the world to reconsider the price of ambition in the depths of the ocean.”
Director Mark Monroe told the streaming service, “When the Titan submersible went missing, I was horrified and mesmerized by the 24/7 news coverage and global social commentary – just like the rest of the world.
“There was no context for what could have happened to those onboard, and the only touchpoint was the Titanic, a story that’s now become a grim fairy tale.
“The more I dug into this terrible tragedy, the more intrigued I became about how this could have ever happened in the first place, and who exactly was the man who built and then went down with this ship.
“We hope that this film can help provide answers to these very questions.”
Part of the film will examine the questionable shortcuts that were made, including Rush’s decision to use carbon fiber for the submersible’s construction. Although it was a cheaper material, there were warnings that it wouldn’t be able to withstand the pressure.
“The film… critiques a segment of society who believe the rules don’t apply to them, and feel well within their rights to break them in the name of something greater,” Monroe added.
“The greatest tragedy, and what I hope audiences come to understand, is how this disaster was completely avoidable.”
