YUCATECOS PHOTO: Yucatecans have destroyed statue of god of Poseidon as they dismantled its body parts as they believe wrath of Chaac, the Mayan god is the cause of Tropical Storm Alberto and the approach of Hurricane Beryl in Puerto Progreso, Yucatan

Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Yucatecans have destroyed statue of god of Poseidon as they dismantled its body parts as they believe wrath of Chaac, the Mayan god is the cause of Tropical Storm Alberto and the approach of Hurricane Beryl in Puerto Progreso, Yucatan.

With Hurricane Beryl ‘s imminent arrival in Cancun, Quintana Roo, social media and residents of Progreso, Yucatan, are abuzz with controversy. The statue of Poseidon , recently installed on the boardwalk, has been accused of attracting natural disasters. This phenomenon began with Tropical Storm Alberto, and now, with the threat of Hurricane Beryl, the bizarre theories have gained even more traction.

At the end of May, a monumental statue of Poseidon appeared unexpectedly on the Progreso boardwalk. The 3-meter-high figure surprised both tourists and residents, since there was no official notice about its installation.

The municipality, headed by Julián Zacarías Curi, explained that the sculpture was part of a program to attract tourism, which also included the inauguration of a basketball court and a skate park.

The statue’s creator, Chapa Balam Díaz , an industrial welder, revealed on Facebook that he had begun the project on May 8 and that the figure was made of fiberglass.

He clarified that he was not hired directly by the mayor and that he simply fulfilled a request. However, the lack of official communication about his installation has further fueled conspiracy theories.

Among the theories circulating on social media, one of the most popular suggests that the statue of Poseidon would have angered Chaac , the Mayan god of water and rain, thus causing the recent storms.

A viral video by a Yucatan resident humorously explained this supposed connection, increasing superstition among locals.

The situation escalated with the creation of a Facebook event proposing to destroy the statue of Poseidon. Scheduled for July 15, this event generated controversy and quickly escalated in popularity, reaching thousands of people.

However, the negative reaction of many users, who took the proposal seriously, led the organizer to cancel the event. In his farewell, he thanked those who understood the humorous meaning of the initiative and regretted the hateful comments received.

As Hurricane Beryl approaches the coast of Cancun, tensions are rising in Progreso. The community is divided between those who see the statue as a simple piece of art and those who firmly believe in its negative influence. This debate has highlighted the importance of respecting local traditions and deities in a region as rich in history and culture as Yucatan.

Meanwhile, authorities and residents are preparing to face the climatic challenges ahead, keeping an eye on the statue that, for many, has become a symbol of controversy and superstition.
