X community notes wrote: “This is Kim Jong-un, in October 2020, describing how his efforts had “not been sufficient” when taking up the nation’s cause from his father and grandfather, Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il.
“I am really sorry for that,” he said to the tearful reaction of all those present.”
Later, Pyongyang denied that Kim had recently sent Trump a letter and accused him of evoking the personal relationship for “selfish purposes.”
The effects of their friendship diplomacy are mixed. North Korea has not taken concrete steps to abandon its nuclear program and has continued testing missiles.
Asked Tuesday whether he would attempt to contact Kim during his reported period of convalescence, Trump said he might.
“I may,” Trump said. “I just hope he’s doing fine.” The Associated Press reported at the time that Kim also warned he would “fully mobilize” North Korea’s nuclear force if threatened, but avoided any direct criticism of Washington.
A transcript of the full speech translated to English by The National Committee on North Korea, a U.S.-based organization, does not mention anything about conflicts in the Middle East or Ukraine, nor the 2024 U.S. presidential race.
Multiple Korean speakers and an expert who reviewed the portion of the speech circulating online also confirmed Kim says nothing of the sort in the footage.
Instead, Kim thanks his people and his military, saying: “The patriotic and heroic commitment shown by our People’s Army soldiers on the unexpected frontlines of epidemic prevention and natural disaster recovery this year is something that evokes tears of gratitude from everyone.”
Social media users are sharing an old video of Kim giving a speech, featuring captions that falsely claim he weighed in on both U.S. politics and the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
“I’m afraid that if the Biden admin does not cease to exist in the next election, World War 3 may begin,” the captions continue. “Who knows what next year’s war will be. I support Donald Trump for President in 2024. Good Luck to Mr. Trump.”
The video was shared on Instagram and TikTok, with one TikTok post garnering more than 223,000 likes on the platform as of Monday.
However, the video is old and the captions are completely inaccurate.
Clips and images from the same speech can be seen in news reports from October 2020 about an event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Korean Workers’ Party.Kim recently missed the celebration of his grandfather’s birthday on April 15, which raised speculation about his well-being. He had been seen four days before that at a government meeting.
Trump, who has met Kim in person three times and crossed the Korean Demilitarized Zone alongside the young dictator last summer, said they had developed strong ties.
“I’ve had a very good relationship with him,” Trump said.
Trump has previously described “falling in love” with Kim and exchanging glowing letters that underscored their unusual relationship.
He said last week he received a “nice note” from Kim recently.
