Sergio Ramos asked the referee to go to the VAR in order to cancel the 2nd yellow card that he received.

The referee agreed and went to see the tackle on the screen. When he returned, he cancelled the yellow card and gave him a direct red card.

But while Sevilla had two players sent off in the match, it was Ramos’ dismissal that proved to be somewhat bizarre.

With Real Sociedad trying to close out their 2-1 lead, frustrations were boiling over in the Sevilla side with Ramos picking up a second booking for a foul on Brais Mendez.

After furious appeals, the referee consulted VAR and rescinded the second yellow card – only to then show him a straight-red card instead.

Sergio Ramos hit out at referee Jose Munuera and the video assistant referee (VAR) system following Real Madrid’s 2-0 loss to Real Sociedad on Sunday, asking for “fairness” after two crucial decisions went against Los Blancos.

The hosts were denied a penalty and lost winger Lucas Vazquez to a red card, and Ramos said both decisions should have been handled better, per Goal’s Sacha Pisani:

“The referee played a big role in things. I’ve always defended the VAR system, but it has to be improved because what we’ve seen was scandalous.
