Ariana Grande is trying to “eternal sunshine” her own mind in her latest music video.
On Friday — alongside the release of her seventh studio album Eternal Sunshine — the pop star, 30, shared the music video for “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” which channels the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
In the visual, directed by Christian Breslaur, who also helmed “Yes, And?,” Grande portrays a character called Peaches who is undergoing a procedure to erase her memories of an ex-boyfriend, played by Evan Peters.
She clings to certain material items that remind her of the memories — a teddy bear from one of their first dates, a necklace that he gave her — but eventually, the weight behind those items is erased. Both Grande and Peters also reprise the 2004 film’s iconic snow angel scene. The video ends with Grande completing the procedure (despite some emotional resistance), her walking past Peters, and both of them being oblivious toward each other.
