New York resident Mark Longo rescued and raised an orphaned baby squirrel named Peanut. After releasing Peanut into the wild, it returned, unable to adapt.
Peanut and Fred the raccoon, another of Mark’s rescues, gained 500,000 followers on social media.
Mark used funds from their fame to open a farm shelter for 300 animals, though he was still securing the proper licenses.
However, animal rights activists reported him for keeping wild animals at home, leading authorities to seize Peanut and Fred.
Both animals were euthanized due to a theoretical rabies risk. Longo announced plans to sue for their deaths, sharing an emotional post about the loss.
