The senior Tory toff lost by about 5,000 votes to Labour’s Dan Norris as the results for Somerset North East were announced at around 5am on Friday morning after a bloodbath night for the party, which saw other major figureheads lose their seats, including Penny Mordaunt, Grant Shapps, Therese Coffey and former Defence Minister Johnny Mercer.
West of England Mayor and former MP Dan Norris declared he “got Moggxit done” as he unseated the man who took his seat back in 2010. His loss came as Rishi Sunak conceded defeat to Keir Starmer at 4.45am on Friday morning, despite retaining his Richmond seat with a 13,000 majority.
The returning Labour MP told The Mirror: “It’s great to get Moggxit done. A lot of people have wanted that including me. Of course because I used to be MP for the area an Mr Rees-Mogg beat me back in 2010, it’s very nice to return the compliment.
