Taking to social media, her aunt, Nicole Zondo, spoke as she gave a brief detail of the rape incident, involving her niece.

“Was sexually assaulted at Emma’s Crèche in Sherwood, Durban, where we trusted her teacher, Miss Emma. In the afternoon, her mom found her sitting outside alone while the other kids were inside. When she saw her mom, she immediately wanted to leave, saying she was tired.

“3/She could barely walk, constantly asking to be picked up because it was painful. At home, she asked to go to the toilet but had already messed herself. While cleaning her up, her mom noticed blood and dried blood clots in her private parts. My niece said it hurt and was sore.

“4/She was then rushed  to Addington Hospital but was told they needed a specific letter detailing the incident. After getting the letter from the police, we waited hours only to be told by the gynecologist that there were no ‘visible bruises.’

“5/Back at the police station, my sister had to recount the traumatic incident multiple times to different police officers. They insisted on getting a statement from my 2-year-old niece, who was too exhausted to cooperate.

“There are no male teachers at the crèche except the principal’s husband. When asked if she was in pain, Zanothando pointed and said a teacher did it. Our family is devastated and demands that the crèche be closed and all teachers held accountable.

“7/The police have failed us, imposing their duties on a traumatized mother. The state of GBV in South Africa is horrifying and we must act now. We urgently need the public’s help. How do we move forward as a family? What can you do when the police are slow to act?”
