The man killed by police after a dramatic highway shootout on Good Friday has been identified as Charles Assing, also known as “Beaver”, of Pinto Road, Arima.
Authorities have since confirmed that Assing is linked to the murder of 30-year-old nurse Odelle Lalman-Baptiste, who was found dead in bushes off Hospital Road, Carlsen Field on Saturday April 19th, 2025.
Around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, a van, allegedly taken during an earlier robbery/kidnapping, was spotted along Carapo Main Road by officers of the North Central Division Task Force.
A high-speed chase ensued after police attempted to intercept the van east along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway. The driver drove across the median and proceeded east along the westbound lane.
The chase ended near the Eastern Correctional Rehabilitation Centre (ECRC), where the suspects crashed into a drain and fled on foot.
During the foot chase, one of the suspects, now identified as Assing, reportedly opened fire on officers, prompting them to return fire. Assing was shot and collapsed in nearby bushes with an object resembling a firearm found near his body.
He was taken to the Arima Health Facility, where he was pronounced dead. Police said a Glock pistol, 9mm rounds, and several spent shell casings were recovered from the scene.
The second suspect escaped and remains at large, police said.
Lalman-Baptiste, a nurse with the South West Regional Health Authority, was abducted on Friday night and found hours later with a gunshot wound to the head, sparking outrage and a fast-tracked investigation by law enforcement.
According to a police report lodged by Lalman-Baptiste’s husband Mathias, around 11:00 p.m. on April 18, he was in company with her driving along Hospital Road when he stopped to urinate.
His vehicle was intercepted by gunmen in a black Nissan X-Trail, he further reported. The men, armed with firearms, according to Mathias, robbed him and kidnapped Lalman-Baptiste, fleeing with her in their white Hyundai H-100 van.
The following morning, Mathias led Freeport police to the scene of the alleged robbery/kidnapping, and officers discovered Odelle’s body in a shallow bushy area—a short distance from the original crime scene.
She was found lying on her back, still wearing her mint green top, blue jeans, and pink Crocs. She had a gunshot wound to the left side of her head. Investigators recovered a gold-colored chain, bracelet, smartwatch, and other personal effects.
