Dunedin Airport limits hugs to three minutes

Travelers departing from Dunedin, New Zealand, must keep their airport goodbyes brief. A new rule imposes a three-minute limit on hugs in the airport drop-off area to prevent traffic congestion. Signs outside the terminal state, “Max hug time three minutes,” and suggest using the parking lot for longer farewells. The measure, introduced in September, aims to ensure smooth traffic flow in the redesigned drop-off zone, according to CEO Daniel De Bono.

De Bono explained that the restriction serves as a reminder that the drop-off area is intended for quick farewells. The signs have sparked reactions, with some people objecting to being told how long they can hug. Unlike other airports that issue fines or wheel clamps for extended parking, Dunedin Airport opted for this unique approach, De Bono told Radio New Zealand.

Dunedin Airport, which serves a city of 135,000 on New Zealand’s South Island, chose a “quirky” solution instead of imposing drop-off fees like some British airports. The intention is to ensure everyone has a chance to say their goodbyes, De Bono said. He noted that a 20-second hug is sufficient to release oxytocin and serotonin, enhancing wellbeing, while longer hugs might feel awkward.

Enforcement of the rule is lenient. De Bono assured that there wouldn’t be any “hug police.” However, visitors may be directed to the parking lot for longer embraces, where they can hug for up to 15 minutes without charge.
