The Witcher 3 reportedly has new story DLC in development 10 years after launch

Known CD Projekt Red insider Borys Nieśpielak claims that, according to several independent sources surrounding the publisher, The Witcher 3 is getting a brand-new story DLC all these years later.

Speaking on a podcast with YouTuber Remigiusz Maciaszek, he claimed that Fool’s Theory, the developers who are currently working on a remake of the first Witcher game, are also doing a story DLC for The Witcher 3.

He claims that CDPR is planning to release the DLC after mod support gets added for consoles later in 2025, and that the upcoming content will be released before The Witcher 4 comes out.

This makes it very likely that this new content is meant to bridge the gap between Witcher games and give a bit more explanation as to why Ciri will end up being the main character.

The Witcher 3 reportedly getting DLC over 10 years after launch

Nieśpielak claims that it’ll be at least another year until we get any indication as to what this story DLC for The Witcher 3 could entail. It’ll be 2026 at the earliest.

“From the information we’ve gathered, it appears that the announced secret project CD Projekt RED is doing with Fool’s Theory is the story-driven DLC for The Witcher 3. And this is information confirmed by several independent sources,” he claimed.

Both Nieśpielak and Maciaszek were surprised that this information hadn’t been leaked earlier, with both of them claiming they’d heard about it a long time ago. However, they both wanted more info before mentioning the leaks officially.

“It had to be confirmed and, for me, such a key moment was when, during the quarterly earnings report, CD Projekt Red said that it was making an unannounced project from Fool’s Story,” the insider said.

Nieśpielak claimed that, when he first heard about the news, he couldn’t believe that CDPR was making a new DLC for such an old game. However, with The Witcher 3 having so many ports to modern consoles and the title getting a huge bump in popularity when The Witcher’s show came out, this game has a massive install base. It also helps that it’s one of the best RPGs ever made.

Releasing some new content could get people motivated to play 3 again ahead of launch, or to play it for the very first time and get acquainted with the series.

Nieśpielak was unable to confirm details about the DLC, like whether or not it’d be free, when it’d be releasing exactly, how long we can expect it to be, or anything specific about it. He only knows that it’s being outsourced to a separate developer while the core CD Projekt Red team works on The Witcher 4.

Regardless, releasing DLC for an old title to hype up a new one isn’t exactly unprecedented. For instance, Borderlands 2 released a free content package in 2019, 7 years after the original release date, to hype up Borderlands 3 at the time.
