Former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel has expressed the need for a constitutional amendment to enhance accountability for South Africa’s failures under those in power. Speaking at the 40th Anniversary of the United Democratic Front in Kimberley, Manuel highlighted that the absence of South African voices is glaringly evident within the nation’s laws.
According to Manuel, cultivating activism is essential in ensuring that those in positions of authority are held responsible. He emphasized that the current state of affairs reveals a stagnation in the quality of life despite the existence of rights enshrined not only in the Constitution but also in various laws. Manuel urged citizens to take an active role in their communities and be vigilant in holding public representatives accountable.
He emphasized, “To improve the situation, citizens must actively engage in their lives and question public representatives. In municipalities, it is imperative to continuously address issues of neglect through community-driven actions.”
Manuel’s remarks underscore the importance of civic participation and the role it plays in driving positive change within the country.
