“They are allowed “, DCS clears the air on Dr Nandipha’s prison glow up

Many South Africans following the Thabo Bester/Dr Nandipha story have been questioning why the disgraced celebrity doctor has some ‘prison glow up’. This comes after Dr Nandipha has been always dishing some ‘on fleek’ looks everytime she appeared in court. On Tuesday the infamous doctor appeared virtually in court. Much like her previous appearance, Magudumana sported a full face of makeup, this time around swapping her red lipstick for purple. Her customary husband, Thabo Bester, who also appeared virtually was dressed in a rather surprising Burberry hoodie estimated to be worth over R18 000. Several people complained, saying the two were enjoying some privileges compared to other prisoners. Some went as far as questioning why Thabo Bester never wore orange overalls to court.

Well, the Department of Correctional Services has clarified the confusion. Radio 702 the department spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo on the matter. According to Nxumalo, in South Africa, people appearing in court must wear civilian clothing, not jail uniform. “Even if you are a sentenced person attending to other cases, you are allowed to wear your private clothes when appearing in court”, Nxumalo said. He added that afer appearing in court, offenders change back into their uniform.

Asked about Dr Nandipha’s makeover, Nxumalo said that in both female and male facilities, there are ‘salons’ where offenders are taught specific skills. “They are allowed to wear make up as they are taught in terms of hairdressing, nails and other things. Offenders take advantage of that particular facility and it’s allowed.”
