The government says it has no intention of upskilling Zama Zamas with artisanal mining skills. Mineral Resources and Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe, says illegal miners are mostly foreign nationals.
Minister of the department of Energy and mineral resources Gwede Mantashe claims that since most illicit miners are foreigners, training them will deny South Africans the chance to enter the small-scale mining industry.
This was proposed by the opposition parties such as the Economic Freedom Fighters as a way of trying to reduce the illegal mining which is living lives of individuals at risk.
The African National Congress National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe said that it is clear that the opposition parties such as the Economic Freedom Fighters don’t know what they are talking about.
The Institute of Security Studies estimated that at least “30,000 illegal miners work in and around thousands of disused and active mines across South Africa”, costing the country an estimated 21 billion rands ($1.1m) annually in lost sales, taxes and royalties.
