Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen has vowed that this is the real chance opposition parties have to unseat the ruling ANC.
Steenhuisen told the media that after months of negotiation and painstaking work a deal was signed with seven party leaders agreeing that they would work together to build a charter forging a new majority in the country.
“I am particularly pleased about the maturity shown, and it’s so important that there were no winners or losers but just one winner — South Africa.”
Steenhuisen said that even though he liked the name “moonshot pact”, it “wasn’t a train smash” that other opposition leaders preferred a different name — the Multi-Party Charter of South Africa.
“I loved the ‘moonshot pact’ but as I said in the meeting, I’m a great lover of William Shakespeare and a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. We understood that the name was going to change — but at least it will be the moonshot election.”
The seven opposition parties agreed to unite to prevent the ANC and the EFF from forming a coalition government after the elections next year.
The seven parties — the DA, IFP, FF+, Action SA, UIM, SNP and Isanco — met this week at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park.
This is coincidentally where the Codesa negotiations took place in 1991 and 1992 and mapped a way forward for the country between minority rule and constitutional democracy.
The parties signed an agreement that they would not form coalitions with the EFF or the ANC.
Among the decisions taken at the convention was that lifestyle audits would be conducted on all members, that political parties would share power in proportion with votes received.
