Zimbabwe has faced several controversies related to elections over the years. Some common concerns raised include voter intimidation, harassment, and violence against opposition parties, as well as biased media coverage in favor of the ruling party. There have been allegations of voter roll manipulation, ballot stuffing, tampering with results, and inadequate transparency during the counting and announcement of election outcomes.
Independent electoral observers, both local and international, have often reported on these irregularities. These organizations play a crucial role in monitoring the electoral process and assessing its fairness.
During the Zimbabwe 2023 election which was held on August 23rd, there were reported reported cases of intimidation, delay in the commencement of election process, according to statements issued by international observers.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwean born lawyer who base in South Africa, Barr. Simba Chitando has reacted to some of the comments made by observers during the election process. He warned observers to stop passing judgment on Zimbabwe Presidential Election, while stating that it was only the court that has the power to determine exactly what is fair.
According to his exact statement on Twitter:
“If the election was illegal:
(1) It is left for the Court to decide, and not an observer, to decide [not all observers – witnesses – were in agreement].
(2) The illegality of the election, if so declared by the Courts, would make the outcomes completely illegal. There is no room in law for partial or selective illegality”.
