The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is currently calling for Pravin Gordhan’s resignation as Minister of Public Enterprises over his reckless handling of Transnet.
Transnet is a state-owned logistics firm that has been plagued by allegations of irregularities in the awarding of state contracts. In 2018, Gordhan removed three board members at Transnet and appointed an interim board to address the issues. The previous board was accused of not taking the issues seriously and the appointment of the interim board was part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s efforts to clean up governance at state-owned companies and attract foreign investment.
Gordhan has also been involved in a dispute with Chinese rail equipment maker CRRC E-Loco over the delivery of locomotives and spare parts. Transnet halted the supply of 1,064 locomotives from four original equipment suppliers, including CRRC, saying that contracts worth $3 billion had been unlawfully awarded by the previous board and management.
According to the EFF, Pravin Gordhan is too old to be a Minister and his old age is evidently affecting his decisions. Over the years, the call for Pravin Gordhan’s resignation has increased but President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC have always protected him from the wolves.
