Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Readmitted To Hospital On Monday

Emeritus Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi (94) had been in frail health for some time and was admitted to Richard Bay Hospital last year. IFP founder Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the traditional Zulu prime minister, is back in hospital but not as critical as some reports have suggested. Buthelezi’s spokesman Liezl van der Merwe confirmed that he had been taken to hospital in Swaziland with chronic back pain.

Prince Mangosuthu was suffering from chronic back pain and was scheduled for a routine check-up. Van der Merwe said in a statement that he underwent minor surgery to treat back pain and needed medical attention.

“While he has been released from the hospital, he will unfortunately need to be readmitted for further treatment and recovery,” the statement said.

While the Buthelezi family welcomed the public’s well wishes, Van Der Merwe said members of the public should not visit the IFP founder in hospital.

With the country headed towards a national coalition government in 2024 in which, the DA said, the IFP will play a critical role. The DA also described the IFP as “a vital player in South Africa’s democracy”.
