The atmosphere was Solemn at the funeral of the man who was allegedly a drug dealer, Robert “Kicks” Varrie.

At the Christian Faith Centre in Eden Park, Ekurhuleni, on the 29th of July, Robert’s family and friends wept as they observed his body inside a coffin for the first time after his passing.

After being questioned on the 19th of July at Katlehong, Ekurhuleni during the filming of Sizokuthola, it was determined that Robert was no longer breathing and he had passed out. Later, he was sent to the Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, but he was unable to recover from his injuries and passed away there.

The family has expressed that their grief at Robert’s passing has not subsided. According to one of Robert’s other sisters, their mother and the rest of the family can’t cope.

“It was painful for our mother to see the body of Robert lying in the coffin, and after the funeral, she was taken to the doctor for treatment. It was a difficult experience to say our final goodbyes to our brother. The family is in utter disbelief. My brother was subjected to torture and ultimately put to death,” she added.

“What he was doing to make a living is not something that we can condone,” she said. She stated that drug dealers have an effect on the entire nation.

“The question that needs to be answered is: what exactly is the solution? Will each and every drug dealer in South Africa be put to death? Nobody is beyond the reach of the law. Regarding the matter at hand, we are going to stand aside and allow the legal system to work its magic. “We are looking for justice,” the sister stated.

Kromvlei Cemetery in Brackendowns, Ekurhuleni, was picked as the location for Robert’s burial after his death.

A few days ago, Robert’s older sister shared with the Daily Sun that she had received a call informing her that her brother had been assaulted by a member of the Sizokuthola team and was currently being treated in the hospital for his injuries.

“The host, Xolani Khumalo, was in charge of the situation and should have arrested him and turned him over to the authorities. However, the act of murdering him was the worst thing that they could have done to the family. They assaulted him and then abandoned him at the hospital,” she added.

According to the man’s girlfriend, who spoke to Daily Sun, the deceased was allegedly involved in the narcotics trade. She explained that she was at the salon when the Sizokuthola crew arrived at their residence with “Panyaza cops” dressed in green uniforms.

“When they arrived, my partner was holding our newborn girl who was two months old at the time. They brought the infant with them and handed it over to a resident of the building. They told me to wait outside when I arrived, and I could hear my partner screaming inside the room.

“Even after he told them he only had two packets of drugs in his pocket, they still assaulted him,” she added.

Moja Love stated in a statement that it was conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a suspect while filming Sizokuthola on Sunday, July 23.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for the police department, has confirmed the occurrence.

He stated that a case of murder was opened at the Vosloorus Police Station and then transferred to the Katlehong North Police Station, which is where the investigation is currently taking place.
