Illegal mining is a huge and growing problem across much of Africa but it seems to be particularly prevalent in South Africa, where it is getting rapidly larger and more organised in scale. Individuals involved in this act are often backed by elites.
The situation is really getting intense and the job itself is becoming riskier as the day goes by. Illegal miners have shown little or no interest in ending this dastardly act despite effort by government to address the issue of illegal mining.
In a recent development, the immediate past Mayor of Central Karoo, Mr Gayton McKenzie has called on the Government to act very fast on the issue of illegal mining happening across the nation.
He urged the administration of President Cyril Ramaphosa to unleash the military on illegal miners before their become uncontrollable. He also stressed that South Africa will have a bigger problem to deal with in the future if nothing is done about the activities of illegal miners from Mozambique and Lesotho.
He expressed dissatisfaction that the government is waiting for more casualties and fatalities before some decisive will be down to save the situation.
