The move could further increase tensions with the U.S. The South African Rand need to be protected by all means. If the Rand falls, it cannot be picked up. This looming tension between ANC and USA may lead to policies that affect the Rand.

Because of sanctions that were imposed on Zimbabwe for the violation of the white Zimbabweans, Zimbabwe experienced a period of hyperinflation spanning a few decades that culminated in 2008 with the introduction of the 100,000,000,000,000 banknote. If sanctions are imposed, the Rand might suffer.
