Former minister, Derek Hanekom has fired shots at the ANC secretary general, Fikile Mbalula in defense of minister Pravin Gordhan.

This comes after Mbalula had told Pravin that he must do better in his portfolio or risk being moved. It seems the ANC secretary general struck a nerve, and Derek Hanekom came out to defend his fellow comrade.

“Now I am going to say to Pravin Gordhan, I was with him there, I was also a minister of transport. Comrade Pravin move faster or otherwise we will move you,” said ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula during his speech at ANC Women’s League conference.

Hanekom said this statement made by Mbalula is unfair because he only singled out one minister, while there are others who are not performing well. The former minister also took Mbalula to task when he questioned him if he was happy with how he performed during his time as transport minister.

This shows that the centre is not holding within the African National Congress. Some critics said Mbalula touched the “untouchable” Pravin Gordhan, and that is why people like Derek Hanekom who are quiet when Jacob Zuma is being insulted, was quick to defend Pravin.

“When you make a statement like this, you need to explain why you are not making a statement on a number of poor performing ministers. Are you satisfied with your own performance when you were a minister?” Derek Hanekom said.

Critics said what is happening within ANC is a clear indication of cabal politics. They said Mbalula was quick to deal with the likes of Ace Magashule, but he will do nothing about Derek Hanekom who continues to undermine his leadership.

“The ANC is on autopilot, an ordinary ANC member taking head on a secretary general of the party shows that the centre is not holding,” said a social critic.
