Wagner boss, Yevgeny Prigozhin, today breaks his silence, claiming his forces’ advance toward Moscow was a “protest” and not an attempt to overthrow Putin. He said that there was never an intent to overthrow the president, saying that they were only in a protest. The Wagner boss said this in an audio clip that was recently released. This is the first time he will be speaking since the alleged mutiny. Explaining why the march was abandoned, Prigozhin said he would rather not shed Russian blood – and insisted that he had no intention of overthrowing the government. In an interview with president Vladimir Putin for the first time since the alleged coup, he said that he forgives everything, but he doesn’t forgive betrayal. Perhaps, the Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin decided to clarify what led to the situation after seeing or hearing about the interview of President Vladimir Putin.
There are rumours that the Wagner boss was paid to lead a coup against Vladimir Putin probably by rival NATO. However, Yevgeny Prigozhin in the audio clip said, “We have shown the level of organisation that an army must meet.”
Prigozhin also insisted that he is still receiving words of support from civilians – and some of his fighters were greeted with flags.
“They were all happy when we passed by. Many of them still write words of support, and some are disappointed that we stopped,” he said. He was reacting to the reason his group or private army turned back. The convoy stopped 200 km (125 miles) short of Moscow and had “blocked all military infrastructure” including air bases along its path, he added.
Russian media reported a criminal probe against Prigozhin continued, and some lawmakers called for his head.
