Celebrities are often subjected to bullying on social media due to several factors. One of the primary reasons is the widespread culture of anonymity and detachment that social media platforms offer. People may feel emboldened to engage in bullying behaviour when they can hide behind a screen name or profile picture, which can lead to the targeting of celebrities.
The internet can be a hostile place, especially if you have a huge online presence. One celebrity who recently faced the vile comments on Twitter is Bella Okagbue. Bella is a Nigerian content creator, reality TV star and second runner up in the seventh season of the Big Brother Naija reality show. The star took to her Twitter account to post pictures of herself and captioned them BBNaija Reunion Day 3. It wasn’t long before a Tweep commented on the post and wrote “Definition of beauty without brains, you ate this look.”
Coming to Bella’s defence, tweeps were quick to defend the star. One Twitter user wrote “One day, all of you will eventually get tired of bullying Bella. She has refused to fold and accept your perception of her relationship. Leave her alone.” Another user said “She is who God says she is, your misfortune is not who she is. The lie you tell is not who she is. So, take all the bad energy for yourself and family.”
It is important to recognize that bullying celebrities on social media is fundamentally wrong. Celebrities face bullying on social media due to various factors. Everyone, regardless of their status, deserves respect, dignity, and the opportunity to express themselves freely without fear of harassment.
