President Cyril Ramaphosa, who holds the esteemed titles of being both the leader of the African National Congress and the Republic of South Africa, has faced a slew of criticism online.
It appears that he has failed to deliver on a promise he made during the funeral of the late Winnie Mandela, the former wife of the iconic Nelson Mandela and a significant figure in South African history. This failure has led online commentators to label Ramaphosa as an untrustworthy and deceitful person.
At the funeral, Ramaphosa made a solemn pledge that he would visit the Marikana Massacre widows in 2018. These widows tragically lost their husbands in a highly controversial mining incident where SAPS members shot and killed miners. However, to the dismay of many, Ramaphosa has yet to fulfil this promise. This perceived negligence has resulted in him being branded as an unscrupulous liar.
During his heartfelt speech, Ramaphosa recounted an incident where Winnie Mandela expressed her desire to take him and Julius Malema, a prominent South African politician, to visit the widows in Marikana on her 80th birthday.
Unfortunately, due to her ailing health at the time, the visit could not materialise. In light of her passing, Ramaphosa vowed to honour her memory by fulfilling this missed opportunity, claiming that the spirit of Winnie would guide him on this journey. He even expressed confidence that Malema would join him on this pilgrimage.
Interestingly, the camera captured Malema’s response to Ramaphosa’s speech. He appeared to find the president’s words amusing, seemingly aware that the promised visit would never come to fruition anytime soon.
OPINION
Cyril Ramaphosa has been occupied with various responsibilities lately, including managing the pandemic and preparing for the upcoming elections. Despite his busy schedule, it is likely that he will make time to personally meet and express his sincere condolences to the widows in Marikana when he can.
