As Zimbabwe heads towards its 2023 national elections, there are increasing calls for the country to undo conditions that have led to political violence.
Since the country’s independence in 1980, consistent Zanu-PF electoral victories have been disputed by opposition parties and international observers, who have cited voter intimidation and claims of state-sponsored violence.
Zimbabwe has a long history of violence in the context of elections, with opposition parties repeatedly accusing Zanu PF of being behind the attacks. Amnesty International has previously documented similar election-related human rights violations in the country.
Zimbabwe’s main opposition CCC and leader Nelson Chamisa is being blocked at every turn from holding important rallies around the country, including its official campaign launch, by partisan police brazenly acting like Zanu PF political commissars when they are public servants who are paid by taxpayers money.
The document attached below is a signed copy of statement released by Zimbabwean police with respect to CCC political party campaign kick off. The State claimed that the venue meant for the campaign is an empty piece of land which is bushy without serviceable roads, water and sewage facilities.
This is clear and further evidence that elections won’t be free, fair and credible under such a political environment and conditions.
