Bring it on – Mashatile reveals he has nothing to hide about his lifestyle

South Africa’s deputy president Paul Mashatile has insisted that he is ready for a lifestyle audit.

This comes after president Cyril Ramaphosa announced that a lifestyle audit would be done on government officials.

Mashatile’s lifestyle cake under fire in recent months after a Sunday publication revealed an expose from his alleged former girlfriend.

Speaking during an address to the media, Mashatile divulged that he had nothing to hide and he welcomed the audit.

In recent weeks, however, the pressure has amplified. From revelations that he stays in a R37m house from a son-in-law who obtained loans from the state in dubious circumstances, to how he lives a diamond-studded lifestyle seemingly untethered from the salary he gets as a government official.

Mashatile is ripped to be South Africa’s next president after Ramaphosa and he definitely is riding on the wave.

This raises awkward questions about his ethical judgment, but that may not even be his biggest problem.

It’s that the man now a heartbeat away from getting his hands on the country’s rudder appears empty, according to a number of analysts who have spoken in the past two weeks.

The lifestyle audit is set to look into the lifestyles of senior government officials and opposition parties are waiting for this moment.

For a man who was previously the ANC’s treasurer-general, this reflects a tangible disappointment that Mashatile’s contributions to economic discussions seem stilted, cleaving more to platitudes and easy talking points.

But then politics has always been his forte. And his outspoken opposition to former president Jacob Zuma’s administration in the heady years when he was one of the few in the ANC with the courage to speak out and demand Zuma’s resignation.
