Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has accused the African National Congress (ANC) of excluding his party from a pre-Brics event due to “political jealousy.” The event, known as the Brics Political Parties Forum, is set to take place later this month and aims to discuss global matters, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While the ANC’s alliance partners, the South African Communist Party (SACP) and Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), will be participating, no opposition parties, including the EFF, have reportedly been invited.
According to Sunday World, some senior ANC members opposed inviting Malema and the EFF due to the party’s hostile stance towards the ruling party. Malema stated during a press conference that the exclusion of the EFF from the event was clearly motivated by political jealousy and undermined the party’s role in global affairs. He emphasized that the EFF is an important voice in society and should not be ignored.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula mentioned that the EFF would need to formally request an invitation if they wished to participate in the forum. However, Malema claimed that no such invitation had been received by his party.
The leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), John Steenhuisen, also confirmed that his party had not been invited to the event. He expressed concern that the dialogue was being conducted in an exclusive manner, which contradicted the purpose of the forum. The exclusion of opposition parties from the Brics Political Parties Forum raises questions about the event’s inclusivity and the ANC’s motivations. It remains to be seen whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the main Brics summit next month, further adding to the uncertainty surrounding the event.
