ANC deputy president, Paul Mashatile was leading other comrades in singing struggle songs ahead of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s address. As this was happening, people noticed that former health minister, Zweli Mkhize was not having it.

Mkhize was sitting in the front row at the ANC NEC meeting which was being addressed by president Cyril Ramaphosa. Social critics noticed that the Kwa-Zulu Natal heavyweight was not showing interest in what was happening there.

ANC National Executive Committee members were chanting slogans and singing praises to president Cyril Ramaphosa, but Zweli Mkhize was doing the complete opposite. He was not waving his fist in the air like all the other comrades while chanting slogans.

At one point, he had to put his hand in the pocket, and was not bothered by what was happening. This led social critics to make a conclusion that Zweli Mkhize is just part of the National Executive Committee, but it seems like he is not happy to be there.

Social critics said Zweli Mkhize is not even pretending to be happy at the ANC National Executive Committee. He is letting his emotions show through action.

“Why is Zweli Mkhize not clapping? He needs to heal and move forward. This behaviour must not be condoned by the ANC,” a social critic said while condemning Zweli Mkhize’s behaviour at the NEC meeting.

This behaviour by Zweli Mkhize has been interpreted to mean that there is no unity in the African National Congress and that most comrades are just pretending to be happy when they know they are not happy.

President Cyril Ramaphosa was closing the National Executive Committee meeting. Perhaps Zweli Mkhize was just tired. In his closing remarks, president Cyril Ramaphosa said it is only by working together that the ANC can strengthen the country’s democracy and achieve their goals. Unity is what the ANC needs if it is to survive the coming 2024 elections.
