Nairobi’s police chief, Adamson Bungei, has assured the public of maximum security at the Jubilee Party’s National Delegates Congress scheduled to take place at the Ngong Racecourse today,Monday, May 22, 2023.
The event is expected to witness a power struggle between a faction led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, aiming to oust party members aligned with East Africa Legislative Assembly MP Kanini Kega.
To maintain order, more than 50 police officers have been deployed to the venue to provide the needed security for the former president as well as other delegates.
Opposition leaders led by Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka are expected to join the meeting as show of solidarity.
Anticipating potential clashes between the Uhuru and Kega factions, Bungei stated that the necessary security measures would be implemented. This meeting follows the recent expulsion of Vice Chairperson David Murathe and Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni by Kega’s faction.
However, Kega himself has denied the existence of the National Delegates Congress, asserting that the party will officially notify members of any future meeting.
