Families of extrajudicial killings (EJK) victims gathered and turned emotional at the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) in Quezon City on Friday, as they watched the pre-trial of former president Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC). READ MORE HERE

The 79-year-old Davao politician is facing charges for crimes against humanity for his alleged involvement in the controversial “war on drugs” during his term from 2016 to 2022.

During the pre-trial, Duterte joined via video link in consideration of his long trip to The Hague. Meanwhile, his former executive secretary and head of legal counsel Salvador Medialdea said in the manifesto that the arrest of the former chief executive is considered an “extrajudicial rendition” or “kidnapping,” adding that Duterte was “denied all access to legal recourse.” 

The ICC announced before the end of the pre-trial that Duterte’s confirmation of charges is scheduled on September 23, 2025.

Duterte was arrested by local authorities at the NAIA Terminal 3 upon his arrival from Hong Kong on March 11, 2025. Hours after the arrest, he was immediately flown to The Hague, Netherlands, where his custody was turned over to the ICC. (Photos by Miguel de Guzman/The Philippine STAR)
