Nollywood actor Joseph Benjamin has explained why he chose to work as a cab driver in the United States of America. According to The PUNCH, Benjamin, 46, who moved to America in 2016, claimed on Monday’s episode of the Teju Babyface Deep Dive podcast hosted by the comedian that he used to drive cabs to pay his bills.
“I came to America on the promise that I would find work. So I assumed I’d have a smooth landing there. I packed my belongings from Nigeria, purchased a one-way ticket, and travelled to America. “I was given a well-furnished house and everything.” Then, two days later, the guy with whom I was meant to book a deal with told me, ‘Those our financiers have dropped out. They have a problem.’
“So, I asked myself, what should I do?” He said, ‘From next month on, you will have to start paying rent in this house.’ In Nigeria, one month’s rent was comparable to one year’s rent. “I’m thinking, ‘I’m not making any money, so what should I do?'” I’m at a loss on what to do. So, after being thrust into that existence, I had to find out what to do. I didn’t know where to go. Nothing to fall back on. “My phone was buzzing, like, ‘When are you coming back to Nigeria?'” We have this gig for you.’ I arrived in America with only $1,500. “How do I purchase a ticket to return to Nigeria?”
Benjamin went on to claim that he eventually began driving Uber, Lyft, and working as an Amazon delivery worker in order to pay his bills in America. “And then someone gave me a car,” he continued. I’m thinking, “What do I do with the car?” And they said Uber. To pay my bills, I drove for Uber and Lyft. “I transported many Nigerians; my Uber App name was Joseph.” They know I’m the one as soon as they get in or three minutes into the journey.
