Gakuo breathed his last on Wednesday, November 6. He was former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s brother.
The extended family of former President Uhuru Kenyatta has been thrown into mourning following the death of his brother-in-law, William Maina Gakuo.
Gakuo breathed his last on Wednesday, November 6. He was former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s brother.
“It is with deep sorrow and humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the passing of William Gakuo,” an obituary from a local daily dated Saturday, November 9, stated.
Gakuo was the husband of Sheila Wanjiku Mwangi and uncle to the late Noni, Jomo and Achola, Lena and Bulisa, Ngina and Alex, and Muhoho and Chizi.

The obituary further revealed that the former president’s family will gather at the late Gakuo’s home in Karen on Saturday, November 9, and Sunday, November 10, for funeral preparations.
“The service will be on Tuesday, November 12 at 10:00 am at the Hindu crematorium followed by cremation,” the statement read in part.
The cause of his death was not made public at the time of publishing this article. Little was known about Gakuo but reports claimed that he was the link between former president Kenyatta and his wife Margaret Kenyatta.Â
Gakuo and Uhuru attended the same school, St Mary’s School in Nairobi. It is believed that Uhuru met Margaret through Gakuo leading to their long-lasting marriage.
He was Margaret’s only brother, and the two shared an uncanny resemblance. It was at St Mary’s that Uhuru coincidentally met Margaret, and their love stars started aligning.
Uhuru went ahead to marry Gakuo’s sister at the Holy Family Basilica in 1989, a fruit of Gakuo’s influence.
“I first met her brother. We went to the same secondary school and quickly became friends and it was through him that I managed to meet his younger sister and we started a relationship that has lasted from high school until now. I am thankful to God for that,” Uhuru stated in a past social media interactive session.
