What a successful career Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani has had so far! Just a decade ago, little was known about this Moi University-trained lawyer. But now, she is one of the most powerful women in the country.

In 2022, Achani made history when she became the first woman in the Coast region to be elected as Governor. By so doing, she trounced at least five men on her way to the famous victory.

The nature of her win left many surprised. How could she pull such a shocker considering that she was vying on UDA party ticket in a key ODM party stronghold? But all the same, the message had been sent- that Achani is a formidable force to reckon.

For 10 years, she operated in the shadows of her then boss, former Kwale County Governor Salim Mvurya. Achani’s loyalty as Deputy Governor won her the trust of the man who is now a Cabinet Secretary in the President William Ruto’s adminstration.

The pair’s working chemistry had won the admiration of many people. And it is not surprising that she was easily elected as Governor.

As the only UDA Governor in the Coast region, Achani is very close to power. Can she take advantage of this to springboard her political ambitions?

At the time former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho remains silent, can Achani dethrone him as the Coast region political kingpin?

Whatever happens in future remains to be seen. But the Kwale County Governor is one person to watch going forward.
