Kenyans were left alone when Azimi’s La Umoja coalition washed their hands of President William Ruto’s new tax policy yesterday.
It comes after the government proposed several new taxes in the Finance Bill 2023 as it seeks a way out of the budget crisis.
Azimio’s leader Raila Odinga said yesterday that Azimio is not in the same party and is not to blame if it passes, which means Kenyans will remain vulnerable and no one will fight for them on the issue.
Raila also offered no alternative tax measures, instead rubber-stamping the Kenya Kwanza Act and Budget, which Azimio has nothing to do with.
“If Kenya Kwanza exercises its paid majority and passes the law in its current form, we want the people of Kenya to understand that this is Kenya Kwanza law. This is the Kenyan Kwanza budget. Kenya Kwanza is strangling Kenyans. We will teach our MPs not to have anything to do with it, the former prime minister said in Nairobi.
His decision to distance himself from the bill comes at a time when Kenyans are already struggling with high food prices and other basic needs. 
This means the new taxes can only make life harder for already overburdened Kenyans, even if Ruto’s allies deem them necessary. Ruto was looking for a way out of his government’s financial situation, which he blamed on his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta’s appetite for credit and debt.
Recently, his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, confirmed that the government is struggling to pay its workers and revealed that the money must be channeled to clear non-performing loans.
