Political activist Morara Kebaso has sent out another urgent appeal to Kenyans, reminding them that the change they desire comes with a price tag.
Kebaso is asking Kenyans to contribute funds for the purchase of three computers and two large printers. The equipment, he says, will help a team of volunteer advocates file court cases on behalf of citizens.
“If you see me and my INJECT Team in Laikipia, injecting change, it has cost money to get there. If you see Okiya Omtata filing a case in court, it costs money to do research, print, and pay filing fees.”
Morara, whose bold ‘Vampire Diaries’ exposés have made him a household name for highlighting stalled government projects, added that the struggle to bring about meaningful change in Kenya is far from free.
“Anything you see that brings change in Kenya has cost money, sweat, and tears. The question you should ask yourself is, where did the money come from?”
However, Kebaso proudly declared that his work is entirely supported by ordinary Kenyans via Mpesa donations. Still, he admitted that constant appeals for donations could lead to donor fatigue, prompting him to explore “creative” ways to raise resources.
He’s calling on Kenyans to chip in for the tools that will support his volunteer legal team as they take on the government’s missteps in court.
“Here is the Mpesa Number, wekeni kakitu we want to purchase three computers and two large printers. These will be used by a legal team of volunteer advocates who will be filing cases in court to help Kenyans,” he appealed.
King of fundraising
This comes barely a month after he asked Kenyans to fundraise for him to improve his security detail and manpower noting that the security expenditure would be a secret and hence won’t account for it.
“I am requesting Kenyans of goodwill to support me in boosting my security infrastructure and manpower. The security expenditure will be very confidential therefore I won’t publicly account for it. Only send if you trust me,” Kebaso wrote on his X account.
Kebaso’s signature style of activism, which often includes imitating President William Ruto’s public posture while making grand promises from atop his vehicle, has earned him a loyal following. Kenyans have always come through to contribute towards his civic education ventures.
Morara explains
He recently shed light on why he openly and unashamedly fundraises for his civic education activities from Kenyans
In a statement shared on his X account on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, Morara explained that his approach to raising funds is meant to challenge the status quo of political campaign financing in Kenya.
Morara emphasised that his public fundraising efforts are a way of encouraging transparency and supporting individuals with integrity who seek leadership positions.
He expressed that many Kenyans have contributed financially to his initiatives, which he believes are focused on driving change and holding leaders accountable.
In his statement, Morara stated that by seeking public support, he hopes to pave the way for more ethical political leaders to step up without being bound to corrupt systems or wealthy donors with vested interests.
He explained that this new approach could help ‘sweep out’ corrupt politicians who have long dominated the political scene.
“By unashamedly raising money from the public, I am redefining the culture of campaign financing in Kenya.
“I am opening doorways to persons of integrity who want to occupy positions of leadership to also find the courage to be supported so that we sweep out and imprison the thieves that have possessed our country for their greed,” Morara stated.
