Former presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot has hinted at making the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission a part-time commission following a lot of electoral irregularities in the previous elections.

This comes after the Kenya Kwanza government and opposition leader Raila Odinga’s team reached an agreement on the IEBC. To resolve the political deadlock that recently shook the nation, the Azimia La Umoja and Kenya Kwanza coalitions created bipartisan dialogue teams. They have reached an understanding on how to proceed with regard to the future of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The committee, which was co-chaired by former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka and member of parliament for Kikuyu Kimani Ichung’wa, decided to permit the IEBC Selection Panel to carry out its work without interruption while talks on other open matters continued.

The deal will enable the nation to progress without conflict. However, because electoral fairness is thought to be the most contentious subject in the nation, the grace period will not prevent the bipartisan panel from debating it.
“On the question of stopping the IEBC selection panel, we are not writing to them to stop them from working. We are sending them a judicial notice of the ongoings of this National Dialogue Team,” Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah stated.
According to Dr. Ekuru Aukot, the four years bestowed upon the IEBC Chairman are misplaced priorities and will result in restructuring the commission into part-time work.
The citizens led by the former prime minister Raila Odinga went to the street; some died, others were wounded, property was damaged, and businesses were destroyed in the name of the high cost of living. The first deal that the dialogue team has agreed on is the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission changes. It makes you wonder—elections are 4 years away; was it a priority?
