‘We need new set of faces’ – Eric Omondi on Ruto’s next cabinet

Comedian Eric Omondi has urged President William Ruto to appoint a new set of faces in his next Cabinet.

Speaking on Friday, July 12, 2024, when he appeared in a televised interview with one of the local TV stations, the comedian who, has since turned into an activist warned President Ruto against appointing politicians.

Eric further warned the Head of State against meeting politicians with the intention of forming a coalition government.

According to Omondi, Ruto will be a one-term president should he make the mistake of brokering a deal with the opposition, for a grand coalition government.

The comedian also urged the president to fire Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome over the deaths and injuries that were witnessed during the anti-Finance Bill, 2024 and anti-government protests.

“President Ruto needs to fire the IG today. The IG is a policeman, he understands the nature of his job… people died. If the president attempts to meet politicians with the intention to start a coalition government, Ruto will be a one term president.

New faces of CSs

The comedian went ahead to state that the new Cabinet Secretaries that will be appointed by the president should take a pay cut after they assume office, and that they should not be the faces that Kenyans have seen before.

“Do not bring back anything that we have seen before. This is an opportunity for Kenya to be an example to Africa. The new Cabinet Secretaries that will appointed must take a pay cut upon assuming office, and we need a complete set of new faces,” Eric Omondi stated.

Omondi also urged President Ruto to cut down on the number of  counties and governors, as part of his legacy.

According to the comedian, the number of counties should be cut down from the current 47 to 24.

Eric Omondi argues that President Ruto has a chance of making history and leaving a lasting legacy.

“We need a lean government. Mr President take your time, when you are ready, sijui kama tutaenda referendum. We need to cut down on the number of counties and governors from 47 to 24,” Eric Omondi stated.

The comedian has been at the forefront of putting President Ruto’s government to task. He has been engaging in several solo protests, which have seen him get arrested a number of times.

Prior to President Ruto’s announcement of sacking his entire cabinet, Omondi had threatened to take his protests to the State House.

He had given President Ruto up to Thursday, July 11, 2024, to fire his entire cabinet.

While dissolving his cabinet on Thursday, President Ruto said he will now engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, to set up a broad-based government.
