On Tuesday, October 15, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) announced the arrest of an Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) officer working at the Cooperative University of Kenya (CUK) accused of allegedly demanding a bribe of Ksh50,000 from a student set to graduate in December this year.

The commission revealed that the ICT officer solicited the student for the above amount and in exchange, he would correct an error in the student’s examination results as captured in the university portal, a case of ‘I’ll do anything to graduate, even change my grades’.

“When she went to inquire from the ICT Department, she was told by the suspect that the error could only be rectified if she parted with Kes50,000 as ‘tea’ for the suspect,” stated EACC.

However, the female student was unable to raise the amount and turned the tables on the ICT officer when she reported the matter to the anti-graft commission.

Upon verification of the allegations mounted an operation and arrested the suspect within the University compound after he had received Ksh30,000, the initial part of the demanded amount.

“Upon the arrest on Friday evening, the suspect was escorted to EACC Integrity Centre Police Station where he was processed and later booked at Kilimani Police Station,” added EACC.
