UK & US Issue Alerts To Their Citizens Over Finance Bill Protests In Kenya

The United Kingdom (UK) government on Friday, June 21 issued a safety advisory to its citizens with the anti-Finance Bill protests set to continue next week.

In a safety advisory, the UK government noted that injuries were reported from the protests which began on Tuesday, June 18.

It was noted that the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests are expected to continue across parts of the country, therefore UK citizens were advised to avoid crowded places and political events and monitor local media for updates.

“There have been injuries at anti-government political demonstrations in recent months. Planned protests about the proposed Finance Bill 2024 are expected to continue across multiple cities in Kenya, including Nairobi.

“Avoid political gatherings and large crowds and monitor local media to see when and where major protests are likely,” the advisory stated.

The advisory sees the UK join the likes of the United States Embassy which also issued a safety advisory to American citizens over the anti-finance bill demonstrations in Nairobi.

The Embassy on Tuesday, June 18 urged US citizens to be vigilant and avoid large gatherings around the Nairobi CBD.

They were also told to avoid protest areas and demonstrations, monitor local media for updates, keep a low profile, and notify friends and family of their safety.

“Organisers have stated that the events are intended to be peaceful.  However, large public gatherings can turn violent at any moment.  It is recommended to remain vigilant and aware of circumstances and to avoid large gatherings,” read the statement in part.

“Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/foreigners and have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.”

US citizens living in Kenya were also advised to expect traffic disruptions in areas where the protests were being held.

As of Friday, Rex Masai was confirmed dead following a shooting on Thursday evening in Nairobi City’s Central Business District (CBD).
