Makueni senator Danson Maanzo has asked Cabinet Secretaries Kipchumba Murkomen and Davis Kipchirchir to resign with immediate effect. This is because of the nationwide power outage that occurred on Friday, August 25, 2023. The power outage lasted for almost 14 hours and affected millions of Kenyans, including businesses, hospitals, and airports.
Maanzo said the CSs had failed to perform their duties and should take responsibility for the crisis that caused huge losses and inconveniences to the public. He accused them of incompetence and negligence, saying they had not taken adequate measures to prevent or mitigate such a disaster³.
He also questioned the conflicting statements from the Ministry of Energy and the Lake Turkana Wind Power Plant (LTWP), which blamed each other for the cause of the outage. He said there was a lack of transparency and accountability in the management of the power sector, and called for an independent investigation into the matter.
Maanzo urged President William Ruto to intervene and ensure that such a situation does not happen again. He said the president should appoint qualified and experienced people to oversee the power sector, and ensure that there is adequate backup and contingency plans in case of emergencies.
He also appealed to Kenyans to remain calm and patient as Kenya Power works to restore normalcy in all areas. He said he would follow up on the issue in parliament and demand answers from the relevant authorities.
