‘Serikali ya Ruto ni Chafu’ Raila Warns Governor Against Following What KK Govt is Doing

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has urged governors to uphold strong leadership principles and avoid engaging in corruption.

Speaking at the Devolution Conference 2023 in Uasin Gishu on Thursday, August 17, Raila criticized the national government, stating that it shouldn’t hinder growth of counties.

Raila cited corruption as one of the issues tarnishing the administration of Dr. William Ruto, emphasizing the need for counties to maintain steadfastness.

“County governments should not emulate the practices of the central government. It has many flaws, including being plagued by corruption scandals, mismanagement of public resources, and abuse of authority,” stated the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to the governors.

Highlighting the numerous benefits of devolution, the former Prime Minister said that this governance system should address the challenges facing Kenyan citizens.

“Some of the issues that citizens face date back to the colonial government, and with the support of devolved governments, they can be effectively addressed,” he added.

Regarding grievances raised by Members of County Assembly (MCAs) about salary increases and allowances, Raila suggested that this matter should be evaluated, as it is a crucial pillar for the success of devolution.

However, the opposition leader also pointed out that exorbitant salaries in various public sectors and the misuse of public resources remain significant concerns for the nation, contributing to the government’s entrapment in debt.

The Tenth Annual Devolution Conference, themed “Ten Years of Devolution: Current and Future Lives,” was officially opened on Wednesday, August 16, by President William Ruto.

The devolution conference has brought together leaders from the government, opposition, public institutions, and private sectors to discuss ways to enhance county governance.
